Our first stop was the Hala Sultan Tekke. It was interesting to experience a different religious space. The area surrounding it was very peaceful. Umm Haram was a companion of the prophet Muhammad and buried in a tomb inside the Hala Sultan Tekke. Upstairs in the mosque was a prayer area for women and downstairs was a beautiful, spacious prayer area. We had to take our shoes off and the area was very quiet. It was an enlightening experience. Nearby the mosque, in Larnaca, was the salt lakes. These lakes are very important to the flamingos that like to feast on shrimp in the area. On our way back, we saw some flamingos.
We then headed to St. Lazarus Curch. The craftsmanship was incredible and the whole area surrounding was interesting. During our tour, our guide mentioned some of the oldest artifacts. Christians will kiss these artifacts in prayer, therefore glass or plastic is put over the paintings or artifacts to protect them, for they are very old. During our visit, I lit a candle and said a prayer. This was also an enlightening experience. The architecture inside was incredible. The chandeliers and prayer area made for a beautiful atmosphere. This church is the oldest church in the area, built in the 19th century.
