Day 2: Fancy Interior Designs and Safety Hazards

Today we listened in on a lecture about the Mekong delta, learned a little Vietnamese, and toured the TTT Corporation. While visiting the TTT Corporation, we learned a lot about what their company does, many of the different projects they have taken on, and some of the partners that they work with. After the representative taught us about the company he took us on a tour of the facilities. You can immediately tell that we are in a different country with different safety rules as soon as we started the tour. Every worker at the factory was wearing very little protective gear while they are working with dangerous equipment. Many of the workers were in sandals and some were even barefoot. The closest thing that they had for safety was they wore masks to try and keep the dust and chemicals away. The ladies who were painting some of the wood with spray paint guns had almost no protection against the chemicals besides the thing mask they had on. The safety and labor laws are clearly very different here in Vietnam compared to America, because if a factory like this was in America, the company would most likely be sued or worse until it gave the workers better working conditions. It seemed as though the Vietnamese workers did not really mind working in those conditions so work ethic and overall comfortability most likely plays a huge factor in the working conditions of the laborers. Overall, the working conditions seemed really harsh to try and do that for multiple days a week, but the end result is beautiful, and the workers do not seem to mind the conditions all that much, so as long as the conditions do not get worse, TTT Corporation will continue to thrive as they have been.
