May 7: Our company visit to Hoerbiger was not at all what I expected. The description and technology behind their Piezo chip was so interesting and unique. They even gave an example of how its 100% accuracy kept a 200 gram newborn baby alive through a ventilator. We saw two factories; the first for the Piezo technology, and the second for manufacturing metal gears that go into car engines. Safety is very important and we were loaned some incredibly stylish shoe covers so no ones toes got hurt.

The work environment at Hoerbiger did not feel like I was in a factory – there were many windows, plants, and a fully equipped gym for employees to exercise together. Although these sites were in a rural area, it felt very pleasant, and our guides were passionate about their work. It makes me happy that work culture is very people focused here in Germany.
Business mode was shut down as we left for Oberammagau to see* the Alps! The architecture of the town looked like it would be drawn in a Christmas village coloring book – the houses even had barriers up so snow would not pack the front of their house. I hope no one was afraid of heights, because the lifts took us the whole way up the mountain, and it wasn’t the smoothest of rides. *The clouds and fog were so thick and stark white; it was as if a giant curtain was hanging in front of the lookout. I actually enjoyed the eerie vibe and sounds of the rainy, wet forest.

We did some light shopping in town before finishing the day. I love bringing home souvenirs that will remind me of a particular place/time. I look forward to more company visits and feeling what it could be like to work at one of these companies! Ciao!
