La Boca es un lugar espectacular

Today was a long day of learning with exploring to follow. We started our day at 8:30 by going over to the State Government of Buenos Aires to meet with the current Minister of Health. The building was really cool, but the most interesting part was getting to hear from someone who holds a lot of power in Buenos Aires. We learned a lot today that I did not know even after my own research. We learned that 90% of funds are funded by each province and one of the 3 sectors are the Unions. More than 40-50% of the public is under a Union. We learned that most of the Unions are not sustainable, but a few Unions are very strong. It is also very frequent that they go on strikes. We actually found out that this Thursday workers are going on a strike in front of the President’s house. After that we went over to Universidad Austral to meet and talk with the head of the most powerful Union in Buenos Aires. He further on explained more about the Unions and then went in depth about his role and the challenges he is facing currently. His biggest challenge right now is the budget. Because healthcare is considered a right, it is free. That is a pro as well as a con because it causes a lot of challenges that they have to work around. He explained that people from all over the provinces will come to the hospitals in Buenos Aires to use their hospitals because of how great they are, which is beneficial for them, but very difficult for him and others to manage. After learning all about the Unions we had a bus tour of the city. It was so fun. We went to three different neighborhoods and got to walk around and explore. Our first stop was Plaza de Mayo. We got to see the President’s house as well as the Cathedral which was so beautiful. Our next stop was San Telmo which was a really cool market. They had a bunch of nice shops as well as music and food. And then our last stop, my favorite, was La Boca. La Boca was so beautiful with all the colored walls and shops. It was so fun exploring the city today and all of the cool places Buenos Aires has to offer. I cannot wait to explore and learn more tomorrow!
