Day 3 in Cyprus

BSM

This morning we got up bright and early at 8:30 to visit the first company of the day: Bernard Schult Shipping Management. This company specialized in training employees in certain skills so they are prepared to work at sea on various vessels. Their services are for engineers, crew members, and other possible workers on ships like cruise ships. They also use a larger vertical integration system which means they use their own softwares and services rather than another companies. But they do offer training to other companies for people in different fields of work. After the presentation we got a tour of their training facility and got to see all of the advanced software they use to do various exercises like a boat simulator that took up an entire room. I thought BSM was the most interesting of the companies because they talked a lot about an aspect of engineering I never knew about.

CSM

Once the first visit was done we got on the bus for a short ride over to Columbia Shipping Management. Columbia is one of the most popular ship management companies in Cyprus and they have also expanded to many other countries. There company manages ships for various different clients and companies and have kept an amazing reputation which contributes to their popularity. I found it interesting how the company also does some work in aviation do to the owner of the company having a few planes. After the presentation we went upstairs where we saw an office and another room that had a map of all of the companies ships and some other software to help analyze these vessels.

Medochemie

After the first two visits we had an hour break to get lunch in the old city which was nice. The next stop after that was Medochemie, they are a pharmaceutical company in cyprus that is responsible for importing and exporting different supplies and medicines. We listened to an interesting presentation about the companies supply chain and how some of the processes could take upwards of 5 years to complete. After that we got a tour of the companies facility where we had to wear a lab coat and shoe coverings because it was a clean area. The warehouse was giant with the first part being able to hold around 700 pallets and the second room holding 7000. They also had giant doors that opened and closed rapidly which I haven’t seen before. After the tour of the facility we were finished our first day of company visits and headed back to the hotel.
