Day 3 – Vietnam’s Sustainability Goals

Our third day in Ho Chi Minh City started with another guest speaker session at UEF, this time by one of the engineers involved of the sustainability and green energy development in Vietnam. This session was very interesting to myself, as I got to learn all about the technology that Vietnam is using in their process of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. After that we had a language class where we learned more Vietnamese before heading out to lunch. The lunch was incredible as we ate more food that I’ve never tried before and even got to construct our own spring rolls.

After lunch we had our second site visit of the trip, as we travelled across the city to go see PECC2, a Vietnamese power company. PECC2 specializes in providing power to all of Vietnam, and has recently been moving away from fossil fuels and towards renewable resources in accordance with the country’s carbon neutral goal. During the visit we first got an introductory presentation from some of PECC2’s management and engineers which explained their mission and goals in terms of transitioning Vietnam to sustainable energy. We also saw the office where engineers from PECC2 oversee all of the power plants around Vietnam and can manage them remotely if needed. We also saw how they 3D model for new projects, including using virtual reality to virtually walk around the sites before they’re built. Throughout this site visit we saw how PECC2 is planning a more sustainable Vietnam by using more efficient methods of creating and storing energy, something that was also mentioned in this morning’s UEF presentation. Even though PECC2 focus on all aspects of the power production and distribution of energy, they are one of the prominent companies in creating a more sustainable future through cleaner energy production.

After two site visits, it is interesting to see and compare how different companies are working to achieve Vietnam’s goals of sustainability and it will be exciting to see how other companies work sustainability into their business model.
