Our day in Argentina was full of hospital visits and crazy experiences. We started off by going to a public hospital in Buenos Aires called Fernandez hospital. When we first got there we learned a little bit about the hospital itself, while also learning about public hospitals in Buenos Aires. The Fernandez hospital is the most well-known hospital for the people. When I first walked in my eyes opened wide by how chaotic the first floor was and how many people there were. In the United States many hospitals are very organized, however they are not free. The public hospitals in Buenos Aires are free of charge. You can go and get any medical help for free. Our tour started right after the lecture and it was so cool. We went on multiple different floors and got to see places they just updated, places that needed updates, and all their medical supplies. It was interesting because we were allowed to just walk in and kind of roam the area. We passed by many rooms that had doors wide open or rooms that were glass so we saw a bunch of patients. There was a patient with jaundice and I was in shock because I have never actually seen it in person before. It was eye opening to see a hospital run like that because that is not something I am used to seeing. The private hospital however was very different compared to the public hospital. The private hospital we toured was called Swiss Medical. When it comes to accessing a private hospital, you must have insurance or pay out of pocket. It is not free like the public hospitals are. It is more of a community that once you pay for insurance you are a part of it and can go whenever. One thing that was different about the private hospital is that you couldn’t just walk in and roam the area. We had to get our bags checked right when we walked in and we also could only tour one room. The room was very nice and a cool thing about it is that they were all suite styled so patients’ families could stay with them in their own room. I would say one of the biggest differences between the two hospitals is the amount of patients they can take. The public hospital is free to all, but the private hospital has limited space. It was stated today that the private hospital has 250 beds. When comparing both, the private hospital is definitely more advanced, updated, and secured whereas the public hospital is not. I thought today was very fun and it was cool to be able to tour the hospitals. I can’t wait to do this again!
