Today, I started out bright and early in the morning for a long day and our first company visit of the Korea trip, Eaton. Upon arriving, we went to a briefing room where a Eaton Senior VP introduced the company to our group. It was a great introduction to the manufacturer Eaton and it was very interesting to hear about all of the ways they contribute to the auto industry among others. After some time to ask questions about their business model and company procedures, we strapped on our safety shoes and glasses to head down for a plant tour. This was a great opportunity to see real-life manufacturing. One thing I found especially interesting was how Eaton has integrated “lean manufacturing principles” into their processes. Having read about this and the famous Kanban system in lean manufacturing, it was very intriguing to see the concepts I learn in my business classes and read about in real life. After Eaton we headed off for an amazing Korean lunch where we ate Saam, a traditional lettuce-wrapped dish. Then, I had the most daring experience on this trip so far. We went to a massive Korean fish market full of live fish where me, among others, ate a live octopus! It was a crazy experience but I’m glad to have done it. Finally, we ended the day by going to a KBO Korean baseball game. I was very interested in the way the game was played and the differences between the KBO and MLB. At the game, the fans were constantly engaged and singing throughout, which was definitely a fun experience. A few friends of mine even caught two balls thrown to us by the outfielder. Overall, although this was one of the longest days of the trip so far, it was definitely the best day as I had great business and cultural experiences throughout the day. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
