Hidden History

Today unfortunately was our last day in Amsterdam and no time was wasted. We started off with a quick metro ride to Our Lord in the Attic Museum. Which was a church that was hidden inside houses. When you looked from the outside it would look like a normal house but once you got inside it was a church. When the Protestants took over the Netherlands, Catholics were unable to practice their religion publically, they were forced to do it in private. The museum we visited has an interesting history. Three houses were purchased and it was transformed into a church, but how do you even do that? Well the front building was taller than the buildings behind it so , there was a flat piece of roof that used to construct the church. When we were in the church you would think you were looking at marble, but in reality it was just wood that was painted to looked like marble. The reason behind that was because marble would have been too heavy and the floor would not have been able to hold all of it.

We had a long break before our next planned event so after a quick lunch we headed to the Rijksmuseum. Even with the 3 hours we had, there was so much we didn’t explore. Within that time I managed to see a wide variety of artifacts, from ships and weapons to paintings, and old porcelain

Then we headed to the Anne Frank House Museum. The story of Anne Frank is one that everyone has heard at least once and to be in the house made it a unique experience. I have heard of the same space they lived in and how quiet they had to be but when you went in yourself, you were surrounded by four walls at all times and it’s hard to imagine yourself being able to live here for two years. Each step you took you heard the floor creek and everyone hiding couldn’t make anyone noise so that no one working below would hear. This also limited the times they could use water and flush the toilet since that all made noise as well.

It has been a fun and fascinating couple of days in Amsterdam . We will see what Rotterdam brings us.
