Day 5 ~ A day full of learning!

Yassas! We started our day off with a visit to Vassiliko Works. At this location, Vassiliko Cement Works and VTTV both operate together. We had an information lecture with questions first, then we toured the plant. It was awesome to see such a largescale industrial company in person for the first time!

Vassiliko Cement Works and Port Services ~ The first half of the presentation today was by Vassiliko Cement Works. This place was founded in 1963, and has 3 main services: cement production, clinker production, and port services. They are the largest heavy industry in Cyprus, and the largest production unit in Europe. Their productio9n line starts with b the raw materials at the quarries. they own 2 limestone, 2 clay, and 1 gypsum quarry in Cyprus. The raw material is then transported to the plant and the first product, clinker, is then created. The clinker is then used to either create cement, or it is packed for distribution. The 2 final products at this plant are cement and clinker. The company owns its own port, which is the largest industrial port in Cyprus. They make use of conveyor belts to load up ships for exports, and unload ships for the imports. They use a few silos and storage containers to store safety inventory of their products on site. The Cement and Clinker are the 3rd largest exporting product in Cyprus. At the port, they import coal, pet-coke, alternative fuels, white cement, raw materials, and other bulky cargo. Here are some pictures of the Cement buildings and production line, and the port!

VTTV ~ The last half of the presentation was from VTTV. VTTV is owned by the parent company VTTI. It is the first terminal of its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean. Connecting Europe, the Middle East and Asia. VTTV offers deep water access (up to Suezmax) and road tanker loading facilities. The VTTV jetty is privately owned and is exclusively used for VTTV customers. Additionally, there is a segregated Jet A-1 system, dedicated ethanol storage and excellent blending facilities. VTTV is a logistic and storage for oil products in Cyprus. It is important to have storage facilities for oil because it provides for a place for the surplus product to act as safety inventory, and it ensures the supply can always match the demand. The oil is exported via sea, truck, and pipe. VTTV makes use of the same port at the Vassiliko Cement Works, and they have a large amount of storage units and silos for the oil product on site. Getting to see these large silos in person were amazing!

CMMI is a research and development organization that works towards a sustainable blue economy. They are planning to go more sustainable and carbon neutral They have 3 main divisions: Marine Robotics, Marine offshore sciences, engineering, and technology, and Marine Digitalization.

Marine Robotics ~ This division aims to research and develop marine robotic systems. Some project examples are the CHARISMA swarm robotics, which can be trained to optimize information gained, Sea Centaurs, which are a duo se of AI powered jet skis which can be used for search and rescue and marine monitoring, and also the SMART float project which is an auto USV device.

Marine offshore sciences, engineering, and technology ~ Here are some project examples and descriptions: AI powered autonomous zero emission transporter (ZEST), is the first electrical transportation vessel in Cyprus. BioCNG is a floating power plant that does work for decarbonization. Green Marine aims to accelerate carbon neutrality of sea ships. GreenMED is a full map of decarbon routs for trade.

Marine Digitalization ~ Some examples of projects are IoT lab search and rescue device, IMSP which allocated human activities with environmental protection.

Today was such an informative day, Anido!
