ROHMing the Forest of Clouds

What a walk! Today we had a very early morning. I woke up at 5:50, brushed my teeth and got a quick shower before our 6:20 breakfast. Then we went on a hike through the Cloud Forest. The forest was amazing, we had to have walked over 10,000 steps. Noah Brobst (a friend) and I went on an adventure but to make it back in time, so we had to go almost 3 miles (more like 2)  in 15 minutes (more like 30), but we did it 💪. Then we had a lunch and a much needed free hour. Then we had an interesting guest lecture on sustainability issues in Costa Rica. Finally, we had a fancy night for dinner where we all wore nicer clothes than we usually would on this trip. We took a bunch of very nice flicks (photos).

During our guest lecture on sustainability with the expert, he went over conservation, productivity, and sustainability and how all three relate to the preservation of Costa Rica. Starting with conservation, taking this challenge into our view will help Costa Rica develop a type of framework to protect its ecosystem and conserve resources for the future. The Pacific Ocean contains tons of marine life and it borders Costa Rica. A lot of their bad water (Waste water, black water, and gray water) is pouring now into the streets and ocean instead of the forest like it used too. This is an example of just one thing that the country needs to conserve. Something else is productivity. There is a ton of pressure on local services because of issues such as pollution in Costa Rica. This includes garbage, gray water, noise & light, and roads. The productivity of the resources that are available include machinery and human working. We need to help reduce this pollution.

While these are extremely important, to me, sustainability should be number 1 priority. Being sustainable means that we can use what we have for the long run, which is why we want to do something. We want to preserve our land and make it better for future generations. Also, sustainability can include both parts of conservation and productivity, you can’t be sustainable without both and using your resources wisely.
