Our last site visit before the weekend took us to GreenViet, a green building consultancy firm that works on green building solutions for buildings. We were given a presentation from the co-founder of the company, Mr. Quang. The company was founded in 2013, focusing on a market that was not developed at that time. Because of this GreenViet has had the head start and currently has great experience and great partnerships. Mr. Quang talked to us about how he started the company, crediting a lot of GreenViet’s early success to his network. Because it is preached to me as a business major, it was rewarding to see the effects of a good network and how it plays a major role in starting a company. One statistic that interested me is that 80% of GreenViet’s projects take place in the United States. I think that the company is used to the foreign business environment and has prepared for it with their experience. For example, Mr. Quang told us that GreenViet continuously works on meeting the specific sustainability certifications set by the United States. This puts them ahead of their competitors and allows them to better market themself as a company. During the presentation I was expecting the company to have hundreds of employees, but it just so happens that GreenViet has about 30 employees. We were able to see some of them in action, sectioned off into their project teams and extremely locked in on their work. This was my favorite site visit so far because the success of Mr. Quang and GreenViet proves that success in the business world is attainable through hard work and passion. Reflecting on the first week, I have learned so much about the Vietnamese culture solely by experiencing it. Talking to peers and receiving lessons from teachers have defined Vietnam’s identity, something one cannot gain unless they are thrown into it and forced to learn on the fly. This is how I am experiencing Vietnam, and this is why I feel that I am making major strides in understanding Vietnam’s culture and also understanding how to navigate business ventures and opportunities globally.
