Today we were able to visit two old cities, that had ancient ruins, and lots of history. First, vsiting and listening about the history of Varosi was very interesting. I have never had an experience walking around a town that was completely abandoned, but still standing. not a single building I saw in the town was still populated. They nicknamed it the ghost town for pretty obvious reasons and I thought it was also very cool how the “ghost town” was completely secluded and almost as soon as we left, we immediately entered a populated town.
After leaving Varosi. We used an ancient entrance to get inside the walls of the town. The medieval building sort of reminded me of Rome, but it was interesting since one side of the street was ancient ruins while the other was populated restaurants and active people doing modern day things. The cathedral of the french was active the 13-15th century. they had beautiful stained windows. the town was home to many stray dogs. We ate lunch and enjoyed Turkish food at a restaurant where they continued to bring out so much food for us to enjoy. I really liked enjoying the culture of their cuisine.
Dimitra and Smaragda were also informing us of history of the towns, and about the different sides of the islands, and how they came to be. When entering Famagusta, Dimitri was telling us about the town nicknamed the medieval town. They call it the medieval town since the last structure was from the 7th century. Also, when she took us to the beach in the first town, she was telling us about all the buildings and how they were deserted and inactive. She went into some detail about the doors and windows now being missing and I thought learning the fundaments of the town was informative. Smaragda was telling us about the greeks making a colony in order to fight the british when they were trying to take over Cyprus.
