May 10: Mosquito Mania

The day was very packed today! We started the day with an hour long bus ride to the rural Austral University campus. Once we got there, we had two presentations from hospital administrators about the business aspects of running their institution. During this trip, there has been very little education about how nursing is different in Argentina, and all of the lectures have been strongly business oriented. If I want to learn about the nursing industry here, I have to ask specific questions. While I still feel as if i know very little about the aspects of nursing in this country, I assume that their education focuses more on clinical training due to the staffing issues across most Argentine hospitals. It seems to me that less research is performed at many of the hospitals that we have visited, so it would be likely that there are less directions that one could go with a nursing career, whereas in the United States, there are a wide range of positions with a BSN. During the tour of the hospital, the nursing role looked very similar to that of the United States. Each unit had a nursing station and lounge for the nurses, and they monitored vital signs during rounds. After the tour, we made our way over to a university building while being attacked my mosquitos. That was the most mosquitos I had ever seen in my life. We ate lunch with the students and spoke about cultural differences between the U.S and Argentina. I found it interesting when the student I spoke with described the culture of college as very isolating because they don’t have an on-campus living option. Our students were business students, but as for the nursing education process, they confirmed that it was more centered in clinical practice and theory. Because there is a great shortage of nurses and healthcare personnel in the country, nursing students also participate in clinicals much like the program at Pitt. After the visit to Austral, we were taken by surprise for another hospital visit. I enjoyed this visit because the woman who presented was a nurse herself. However, she still spoke about the business aspects. I found it inspiring that she was a female nurse in a position of high power. Overall, today was tiring, but worth it. I hope to learn more soon!
