Ranch

Today was purely a cultural day, and we visited a ranch called Don Silvano, which is an hour and a half bus ride West of Buenos Aires. Despite the overwhelming swarms of mosquitoes, it was a good time. First, we just explored the ranch- we looked at the fields, the animals, such as peacocks, llamas, sheep, roosters, ostriches, cats, and horses, and then we took a ride on the carriage around the ranch. Afterwards, we learned about the history of the Gauchos, which are the cowboys in Argentina. Iconic to Argentine culture, they emerged in the 18th century on the vast plains known as the Pampas. Originally a mix of indigenous, African, and Spanish influences, Gauchos were skilled horsemen and cattle herders, embodying freedom and independence. They roamed the grasslands, living off the land, mastering horsemanship and knife fighting. Gauchos played a pivotal role in Argentina’s fight for independence from Spain, later becoming symbols of resistance and nationalism. Their culture, music, and attire became synonymous with the Argentine identity, immortalized in literature, art, and folklore. Despite modernization, the Gaucho spirit endures, a cherished emblem of Argentine heritage. They are the reason that Argentina has such a large leather export. Gauchos were not just skilled horsemen but also poets and musicians, expressing their tales of love, loss, and the open plains through captivating folk songs and poetry. Their legacy lives on in Argentina’s vibrant cultural traditions, influencing everything from cuisine to festivals, preserving their enduring spirit for generations to come. After the history lesson, we did a ropes course and zip-line, which was fun. After that, we had lunch in which they brought so many different meats to the table, such as chorizo, pork, chicken, and steak, along with French fries, a salad, and flan for dessert. While lunch happened, there was live music and Tengo. During the lunch there was also an opportunity for everyone to get up and dance, and to learn the Tango from professionals. After lunch, there was a Gaucho show, where the gauchos rode on their horses and did tricks, such as races and whipping lassos. In honor of Mother’s day being tomorrow, Mom, if you are reading this, Happy Mother’s Day! I love you and all you do for the family!
