I had to get up at 5:15 this morning. The last time I got up that early was when I went to Korea! Since I didn’t get to eat breakfast, I was able to see what food the DMZ had to offer. I got a mozzarella cheese dog for breakfast. It was delicious but was not a breakfast food! The opportunity to tickets to get a tour of the DMZ are very competitive. So, our guide had to know the entire process to get checked and get tickets. It is very specific and difficult.
The first thing we did on the tour was watch a video on the history of the North Korean and South Korean conflict. After that, we went through an underground tunnel that took us almost all the way to North Korean soil. The tunnel we walked through was built by North Korea for invasion. It was very small and I was essentially walking at a ninety-degree angle to get through it. I even drank the spring water from the tunnel. We were then able to walk around a museum-like area to learn more about Korean history. Then, we went to the observation deck and were actually able to see into North Korea. With the telescopes and cameras on the deck, you were able to see the North Korean flag, towns, and people.
It was surreal to look at North Korea with my own eyes knowing its history. Politics interests me more and more every day. Overall, I learned a lot today. I saw some really interesting world artifacts and some Korean weapons. I also learned how important sleep and breakfast is. I was exhausted and hungry a lot of the day. However, the day was still fantastic. I am planning on going to bed early tonight and getting a good breakfast tomorrow.
