Besar Gaucho’s

Today we visited ranch Don Silvanos. Here we learned about the large part of Argentina’s culture, gaucho. This is more common to us referred to as the cowboy culture. A gaucho is a skilled horseman and a folk symbol in Argentina and neighboring nations like Uruguay, the south of Patagonia, and Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. A large industry in Argentina is cattle. The presenter told us the secret to the great meat in Argentina is the flat land. Because the cattle don’t have to climb any hills or overly exert themselves at all, their muscle mass is significantly lower than those of other countries.

When we first arrived we were able to take time to look around and take in the ranch. We got to see all different types of animals from birds, to horses, even llamas. After a go a brief history lesson on gauchos and how they have a special part of there culture and ate over painted as brave. After this we went on a wagon ride around the ranch, and completed a ropes course and zip line. Once it was time for lunch we sat down and watched a performance of dancing and sings with a traditional guitar. We were invited to up to dance. Dan and I got to show off our tango skills we learned day 2.

After a meal of various meats and bread we watched a gaucho show where they taught us about what some of the things they do. We had a demonstration of how they herd cattle and even go to watch a common competition they have. They take a stick and ride the horse at fast speeds trying to hook the ring on the stick. Once a gaucho catches a ring he goes to the crowd and picks a lady. If he offers the ring and the lady accepts they must kiss the gaucho. I was approached by the gaucho and was offered the ring and I had to kiss him on the cheek to accept the gift. This was very funny to experience and was one that was unexpected. After this concluded we walked around a little more and called it a nice. Since tomorrow is mother’s day and we will not be home, we all wanted to take the time to thank our moms.

Mom thank you for everything. If it was not for you I would not be in the position I am today. You mean the absolute world to me and I hope you know that even if it is not always obvious. You have given up so much for me and William. Have the best day and I cannot wait to celebrate you when I am home.
