Today was a very long day of walking, learning, and exploring. We started with a tour of Recoleta which was about 3 hours of walking around and learning about the area and what attracts many people. The biggest attraction Recoleta has is the Recoleta Cemetery. We went to visit the Recoleta Cemetery and it was very interesting to see. At first I just expected to see a graveyard with a bunch of tombstones, but this was completely different. Recoleta Cemetery is a famous spot where national icons rest in extraordinary tombs. Instead of tombs they are called mausoleums which are free standing buildings that house tombs. These mausoleums are something I have never seen before. Each mausoleum was dedicated to a family and each one had a story. If you peeked through the windows of some you could see stairs that led to a basement. This is where other tombs were kept, other family members. There was even a tomb I saw that had bones laying on the ground. I was kind of freaked out, but as a whole it was a very cool experience to be able to see Recoleta Cemetery. After the cemetery we had lunch and then made our way to a museum. It’s called Museo Evita. This is a museum dedicated to Eva Perón. Eva Perón, also known as Evita, is a very important person in Argentina. She was the second wife of Juan Perón, the Argentine President, as well as a very powerful political leader in Argentina. She helped bring about the passage of Argentina’s women suffrage law. She also helped to create Peronism along with her husband. Peronism is a political ideology that focuses on social justice, labor rights, and nationalism. When talking about healthcare, the Peron’s also play a significant role. Juan Perón established the Obras Sociales in Argentina. The Obras Sociales are the social security and healthcare systems in Argentina. They play a role as one of the major sectors in the healthcare system by providing healthcare, as well as social services, to workers and their families through payments from employers and employees. Both Juan and Evita Perón are significant figures in Argentina and are still talked about here to this day. It is very cool to learn about, but it is even better to see it. Today we got to see her museum as well as her mausoleum and on top of that we got to learn her story that will always live on.
