It might not have been exactly 100 degrees but after hiking up over 800 steps it felt like it. To start off our Saturday we loaded onto a bus at 6:45 sights set on Vung Tau, a city off the southeast coast of Vietnam. A hike up a mountain was planned to visit a large statue of Jesus Christ. Once we arrived and got off the bus our first problem came. Since it was a religious sight we all needed to wear pants. Most of us wore shorts because of the extreme heat. Luckily for us the store right there had pants for us to buy. This slight detour wrapped up and we were on our way.
Once we go up to the first lookout point the heat started to set in. A mixture of the steps and the heat created a unique experience for the day trip. As I would look around everyone was sweating and a bit uncomfortable by the heat. Not to mention the necessary pants we all had to wear did not help. We all pushed through it and when we made the final turn, we could see the statue and it was amazing. It was larger than expected as it looked out amongst the beaches of Vung Tau. One amazing feature of the statue was how we could go inside and climb up it to the arms of Jesus. On the arms you were offered an exceptional view of the city and beaches. Although we were all hot and sweaty it was well worth it because the statue itself was beautiful and the views were spectacular. Hiking the 800 steps up the Vung Tau mountain was a hectic yet beautiful way to start our day trip.
