A Long Day of Company Visits

For Day 8 in Vietnam, we visited the company Coherent and Saigon Hi-Tech Park. As an engineering student, I was very excited to go on a company visit that was more catered to our interests of material sciences and technology. Coherent specializes in the manufacturing of laser-based technology like optics among other technological devices. Coherent is rapidly expanding as they plan to take on a surplus of employees. Coherent uniquely hires people from very varying educational backgrounds. Our presenter stated that they even prefer for someone to be inexperienced because they would not need to fix bad habits. The developed training process for employees is what allows the company to expand so rapidly. The presentation had a strong emphasis placed on employee treatment.

Later in the day, we visited Saigon Hi-Tech Park, which is one of three Hi-Tech parks in Vietnam. On our tour, we were able to visit many sections across their large site in which we were able to view the manufacturing and research and development of advanced technological products. Their large R&D sector allows them to be especially unique. Visiting the innovation hub, in which resources are provided for anyone to experiment with, reminded me of the maker space I often use in the engineering building. I found it very interesting to walk around and see the many comparisons from my own experience in a similar space. We then visited their training center in which they collaborate with students. In America, this opportunity is hard to come across. I believe this collaboration is important and should be implemented more in America as well. A technological company benefits from having a younger generation or workers.
