All About Medicine

Today we went to Medife and had a lecture led by Dra. Flor Ledesma. Medife can be quite confusing when first learning about it because it is the name of both a corporation and an insurance company. We learned that Medife is a corporation that splits into ASE Nacional, which is Obras Sociales, a union for executives, and Medife, which is an insurance company like Swiss Medical. The company itself has more than 60 branches serving over 300,000 associates. They offer outpatient medical care, hospitalization, emergency services, dental care, and medications. Medife offers different health plans of different levels so people can choose what works best for them. We then made our way to ICBA which is a private institution. They specialize in cardiovascular medicine. Their vision is to make patients live better and longer lives. The way they organize their hospital was actually very interesting to learn about. They claimed that they try not to fill all of the hospital beds and that they try to discharge their patients within 4 hours of recovery. In the United States, after a procedure like open heart surgery, patients are put on bed rest for well after their surgery (many days). At ICBA they strive to have their patients out after just 4 hours. If the patient needs a longer stay they will be transported to a waiting area. They explained that they use ultrasounds to check to make sure that the procedure went well so that bed rest is not needed and this way they can get patients out quickly for new patients to come in. This hospital was actually my favorite one so far that we have toured. When I first walked in I thought it was so boujee. Each floor was dedicated to a different specialty. I have never seen a hospital this nice in my life. After the tour we went on another museum tour. This museum had pieces of artwork that I did not understand. It was a museum that I would not normally choose to go to, but I did have a good time. I tried to understand most of the pieces of artwork and try to see the deep meaning behind each one. There were some that I could and others were so complicated that I would just stand there and admire the piece instead of trying to understand. But I had a really great time. I am also excited to visit another university tomorrow and get to interact with more students.
