Visit to Coherent and SHTP

Today we visited two different companies on the outskirts of Saigon. The first was a company named Coherent. A public company based in the US that has operating plants in Vietnam. They create components for computes alongside lasers for various uses, one being Lasik eye surgeries. The company is undergoing a massive expansion in Vietnam that is great for their development. It is great for the city to offer these well-paying jobs and the company itself has a great opportunity to grow. Since it’s a foreign company to Vietnam its ability to grow internationally is great for its brand as client relationships are able to sore when different countries are involved. Overall Coherent is in a great place to build and grow in the next few years.

Our next visit was at the Saigon High Tech Park. Inside of the high-tech park are many companies who work to create different tech pieces for their companies. To me the most significant part of this visit was the number of employees. Over 47,000 are employed in the tech park which is amazing for the local economy. The most interesting facility we went into was the group that helps startups. Seeing the different startups that have made it big time is always a positive experience. As a business student, being a part of startup would be a unique experience and seeing a company that helps those companies really cool. For a high-tech park to be inside the US would be a big challenge. Sure, some companies operate in the US but the cheap labor in companies like Vietnam make it more attractive to operate there. This is why we see this type of technological ecosystem in Vietnam. The final point to be made about the high-tech parks is the amazing integration between universities and tech parks. Connecting local university student to tech jobs is a great way to create jobs. Getting real on the job experience is important for these students and a great way to prove yourself for a potential job. The Saigon High tech Park is great way the government can promote technological improvements in Vietnam.
