Today we had the opportunity to explore the beautiful Kakopetria. The town itself reminded me a lot of this little town from home, a town that has been around for a long time, so it fit the older vibe as well. Kalopetria had a lot of little back alleyways, cobblestone roads, gardens, and the woods. The landscape had the resemblances of a town within a forest, since it was all surrounded by mountains. There were many corner stores, restaurants, and boutiques. There were trails leading up mountains through streams and in the woods, and the scenery itself was beautiful. There was many plant life, such as orange, lemon, and bay trees that we wondered past, along with different types of flowers and bushes which grow foods.
Before coming here, we were able to learn much about St. Nicholas of the Roof church. This history here was very rich, mainly emphasizing on the paintings that take place along the ceilings and walls of the church. Some of these have been around since the 11th century. I thought it was fascinating how there was not an empty spot almost anywhere in the church. Basically all areas were filled with a painting or artwork of some sort. Stepping in here almost felt like stepping back into time, since everywhere I looked, I was able to experience the different stories the painting were inspiring. Some being Jesus’s crucifixion, the angel appearing to Mary, telling her she is about to have Jesus, the prophets, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and much more. Being able to visit these two places and see the sights I got to see today will forever hold a place in my mind.
