Discovering DeltaWorks: Dealing with the World’s Deadliest Demon: Water

Today, we visited the site of Deltaworks, which is a country wide dam system that disconnects the Netherlands from the surrounding body of water, the North Sea. For decades spanning from the early 1800s to 1953, all the Netherlands had been dealing with a lot of problems concerning flooding and loss of infrastructure. After the flood in 1953, the Netherlands government had decided to put a stop to all of this destruction and massacre that would only keep on coming with time.

With this, they started the construction of DeltaWorks which is a dam system that essentially pans the entire coast of the Netherlands and the North Sea to try and limit the amount of destruction that would occur like it had in the past. There are three things that are allowing the water to do that much damage which are the winds, the tides, and the storms that are occurring at just the right times to allow the water to have that much force and then some. The bridge is constructed out of 65 piers, and one was left behind for some reason, and retaining walls that would allow the water to flow or be caught up in the side of the wall.

The one aspect that would tie to the concept to consumer demand would mainly be that the DeltaWorks ties into two types of positive growth for the Netherlands. While it creates a sense of safety and makes it that the Netherlands does not have to keep on rebuilding their own infrastructure due to flooding and then some. It also created an effective highway system for the Netherlands which creates growth in so many aspects in which it produces an efficient way to transport goods and people while also providing a quick mode of transport rather than taking a train, airplane or even a boat.

With DeltaWorks, it combats the deadly water with all of its flooding and then also giving the Netherlands an easy transportation route. While the Deltaworks walls have been used only around 35 times, it still serves its purpose as mainly trying to stop any more floods from happening and ruining even more infrastructure than it had been before. Deltaworks would also sustainable for the Netherlands since all of the resources that would be destroyed by the floods can now be distributed to other aspects of the country.
