Medife and Malba

We started today with a lecture from Dra. Flor Ledesma, innovations director of Medife, a company that has both private insurance, hospital locations, and a union.  She told us about how the company was organized and clarified some of our questions about the overall structure of the healthcare system of Argentina.  She was telling us about the role of unions and private hospitals in healthcare and how they differ from each other.  Unions pretty much only handle the money for the people, as they take a portion of the salary of everyone who is formally employed and they give it to the union that they choose. They can also give it back to the person in order to give it to a private prepaid plan.  The Argentine healthcare system is extremely complex and it was very interesting to find out how many options the people have who can pay.  After our first lecture, we got a lunch and headed to the Institucion Cardiovascular de Buenos Aires.  We got a lecture where we met the medical director and the head of nursing, who I got to talk to a little bit which was interesting because that is a career I am considering.  I enjoyed getting to learn about his career and it made me even more interested in potentially pursuing that career.  The cardiovascular hospital was very neat and had recently been purchased by Swiss Medical.  It was different than Swiss Medical was by their vision and their mission, as they seemed to be less profit oriented and they really emphasized patient centered care.  Additionally, they are more focused on getting people in and out and their average stay was much lower than Swiss Medical’s was because they make money off of performing surgeries, whereas Swiss Medical makes a profit off of having patients stay longer in their facilities.  After our hospital visit, we went to Malba, the Museo Arte Lationamericano Buenos Aires, which had modern art.  There were many pieces by Frida Kahlo, and it felt similar to the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  There were many pieces that provoked thought.  Overall, it was a very informative and fun day that allowed me to learn a lot.
