Day 10 – Mekong Delta Fun!!

One of the first research topics we had involved in this class was about the Mekong Delta and today we were able to visit. This Southern region of Vietnam is filled with natural beauty and cultural richness. The Mekong Delta is not just an agricultural hub where 90% of rice is yielded, but also a vibrant economic center, with rising industries such as tourism, exports, and aquaculture. As the region continues to grapple with economic and environmental challenges, like the incoming rainy season, it is essential to support sustainable development initiatives that prioritize the well-being of local communities and the preservation of the Mekong Delta’s unique ecosystem. We traveled to a small channel of islands on a boat, provided with fresh coconuts and fresh air. We ventured deep into the delta and enjoyed a private canoe driven by two locals as seen in the provided picture. One of the most exhilarating highlights of my trip was encountering a python up close. My biggest fear has been snakes ever since I discovered one as a child and it was a huge relief to overcome this fear. It was a super thrilling encounter that left me with a newfound appreciation and confidence when encountering these fascinating creatures, and their importance in the ecosystem of the Mekong Delta. However, the excitement didn’t end there. After lunch we then were able to feed a pool of alligators, it was fascinating to see another apex predator in the ecosystem. On top of that, Kevin, Owen, and I spontaneously decided to jump into big hamster-like balls filled with air on top of the water and it was beyond fun! PS: I provided a picture below for some context 🙂
