This morning was a hard wake up. We had to meet at 6:15AM to get ready to go to the DMZ. Surprisingly, the car ride wasn’t too long. When we arrived, we had some spare time so we spent it getting a quick bite to eat. I ate a mozzarella corn dog! It was delicious.
Afterwards, our tour guide showed us around the monuments located at the DMZ. We saw a fence adorned in ribbons with wishes for reunification written on them by South Koreans. Additionally, we learned about how Korean women were subjected to being “comfort women” for Japanese soldiers during WW2. It was educational to learn about this painful part of Korean history.
Afterwards, we went to a site that revealed a secret tunnel to South Korea built by the North Koreans. We traveled inside the tunnel and were able to take a comprehensive look around. Im grateful we had to wear helmets because I almost knocked my head on the ceiling a few times because of how low the walls were! The tunnel was extremely downhill, so the way back up the tunnel was a workout! I worked up a sweat!
Once we exited the tunnel, we went to the DMZ’s observation deck. From the observation deck, we were able to see a village in North Korea as well as the North Korean flag posted up. It was eye opening to see how close North Korea was.
When we finished, we went to a convenience store nearby and got some snacks. I tried this Gatorade equivalent drink called Pocari Sweat! It was tasty! Dr. Yun also bought us his favorite ice cream from his childhood which was extremely sweet!
Since the weather was poor this day, we did not have a chance to tour Bukchon Hanok village, so we returned to the hotel instead. Overall, this day was extremely educational!
