G.A.P. Vassilopoulos Group, Cyprus Day 10!

Today, we had the privilege of visiting G.A.P. Vassilopoulos Group in Nicosia. The company was established in 1964 by Andreas Vassilopoulos, an entrepreneur. Now, it is led by the three sons of Andreas Vassilopoulos, one of whom we heard from today (Petros Vassilopoulos). At the time it was founded, the company specialized in agriculture and shipping. In its current state, the company manages an entire supply chain from producer to retailer, from warehousing, to distribution, to courier servicing – both domestic and international. Some of the specific services offered by the G.A.P. Vassilopoulos Group include logistics (oil and gas logistics, for example), naval and military operations, customs clearing, airline representation, and marine services. All of these sectors of their business help support their entire, reliable supply chain. What I found particularly interesting was that the Vassilopoulos Group works with some of the companies we already visited. They partner with DP World, for example, to organize port logistics for major companies shipping their products to Cyprus and around the world. Some of the major clients of the Vassilopoulos Group include Coca Cola, Dove, Johnson & Johnson, and Lipton. These companies can either request the expertise of the group as à la carte services, or they can choose to utilize Vassilopoulos’ entire supply chain.

Vassilopoulos’ supply chain was incredible. As we heard from Petros Vassilopoulos, G.A.P. Vassilopoulos Group strives to maintain visibility in their supply chain. With more transparency, they believe partner companies are more inclined to trust Vassilopoulos. Dr. Vassilopoulos also discussed the balance between efficiency and agility that the company is constantly monitoring. As he described, companies will not survive, if they only focus on efficiency. Instead, there must be a balance of both principles in order for the supply chain to remain strong. In another significant discussion point, Dr. Vassilopoulos emphasized the importance of collaboration and communication. Although his line of business is competitive, he stressed that his company must pursue joint ventures with other strong players in the industry. Collaboration and communication are also necessary within the Vassilopoulos Group. Because there are many different sectors of the business, everyone must communicate in order to understand the bigger picture. Dr. Vassilopoulos added that if there is better communication from suppliers and producers, the needs of the final consumer would be better fulfilled. The whole process would be more efficient and agile. Also, the more improvement to the supply chain, the cheaper products will be for customers and the better the process will be for protecting the environment.
