We had our last site visit today as we went to Cat Lai Terminal, a port on the river in Ho Chi Minh City. This was an amazing experience as we were able to drive through and stop at different sections of the port and receive information. Being able to see a working port in real time was special. I was in awe with the coordination that is required to run a port like this. There were hundreds and hundreds of shipping containers that were perfectly lined up and marked. The port was massive, with trucks and moving machines in constant motion. Interestingly enough, we were required to check in our passports because there were international ships that were docked. For these ships, it takes about 18 hours to load or unload a ship, with the port taking around 80 ships a week. This efficiency was impressive and it heightened my interest into supply chain management. In the afternoon, we went to Banh Thanh market. This market is famous for bargaining and its compactness. It was hard to walk in some sections! Every little store had minimal space which meant they had to maximize on that space and crowd everything up. It was an experience just walking around. Most of the products were rip offs of expensive items, but that doesn’t mean it was less fun to try to bargain. Bargaining was very fun, some people were more susceptible to it than others. It was totally different than my normal experience because people really wanted me to buy their materials. At home, there is no passion or reason from sellers, they are just there making their hourly wage. But here, sellers had a desire to reach an agreement and sell the item. It was very fun to experience and truly a Vietnamese staple. In between the two events today, there was a fierce downpour outside. Talking with Vietnamese students, I was told that this happens almost every day during their rainy season. This rain makes it even more difficult for local Vietnamese to sell their products and attract customers. This experience has been life changing for me. Gaining this perspective and making these relationships will help me for the rest of my life. I am so lucky and fortunate that I could experience these moments!
