Day 11-12: Reflecting on Costa Rica

What an amazing experence for my first time out of country. I have learned so much about culture that is impossible to gain in a classroom. Such a great trip! One of my favorite parts had to be seeing the landscapes and country side. It was truly beautiful. I will definetly have to come back and visit again!

We also learned A LOT about supply chain while we were here. Heres a mini walkthrough on what our group worked on these past two weeks…

When it comes to the Farm, there is a lot of planning that goes into it. Farmers must plan the cultivation of coffee, ensuring optimal altitude, soil quality, and climate conditions. They must also manage factors such as shade, water availability, and pest control. For fruit, farmers need to strategize spacing, irrigation, and soil fertility.

Moving on along in the supply chain, we meet the exporters and processing mills. For coffee, processing mills must plan for efficient pulping, fermenting, drying, and sorting processes, while exporters navigate quality control and international packaging standards. Similarly, for fruit, processing mills must coordinate washing, sorting, and packaging, while exporters have to plan efficient logistics and ensure timely delivery to maintain quality.

Coffee roasters and retail stores/cafes are pivotal in bringing the final product to consumers. Roasters focus on sourcing high-quality beans, developing roasting profiles, and packaging for retail or wholesale distribution. Retailers and cafes, on the other hand, must strategize inventory management, staff training, and customer service to ensure a satisfying experience for consumers. For fruits, similar considerations apply, with retailers planning attractive displays, pricing strategies, and incorporating these fruits into menu items or selling packaged products while maintaining freshness and quality.

Lastly, customers are the ultimate factor for success. Ultimately, planning to meeting customer expectations is key to the success of all stakeholders in the coffee, banana, and pineapple supply chains.
