From Local Leadership to Global Health: My Path to the Netherlands

Hello, my name is Emily Angelo, and I am a passionate and well-rounded individual with a strong background in academics, athletics, leadership, the arts, community service, and work experience. Throughout high school, I was an active member of the cross-country and track teams, where I developed perseverance, teamwork, and leadership skills, eventually becoming the captain of both teams during my senior year. I was also deeply involved in the marching band for four years, playing the saxophone and serving as section leader during my senior year. Academically, I graduated with a weighted GPA of 4.07, ranking 7th out of 140 students, and was a member of both the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society. As vice president of the National Honor Society, I played a key role in organizing service projects, including participating in Relay for Life. I also served as vice president of my senior class and vice president of the Interact Club, where I helped establish a school food pantry. Additionally, I served as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Student Council, maintaining order and assisting with event coordination.

My experiences have taught me the importance of leadership, organization, and community involvement. Outside of school, I worked at a local mini golf course serving ice cream and as a food and beverage server at Nemacolin, where I developed customer service skills and learned to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Balancing athletics, music, academics, leadership roles, community service, and part-time work has shaped me into a dedicated and adaptable individual. I am eager to apply these skills and experiences to new opportunities as I move forward.

I have chosen the Frederick Honors Plus3 program in the Netherlands not only because it was available to me but also because it offers a unique opportunity to explore public health through the lens of sustainability in a global context. The Netherlands is renowned for its progressive approach to health systems, sustainable practices, and community well-being, making it an ideal setting to expand both my academic and professional perspectives.

As a public health student, I am particularly drawn to this program because it aligns with my passion for understanding how different countries address public health challenges while prioritizing environmental sustainability. Learning about innovative Dutch practices, such as sustainable urban planning, community health initiatives, and integrated care models, will provide me with practical insights that I can apply to my future career. I am eager to immerse myself in Dutch culture, which emphasizes collaboration and forward-thinking solutions, helping me grow as a globally-minded professional. Academically, I hope to bridge my classroom knowledge with real-world applications by engaging with local experts, participating in site visits, and collaborating on projects that address health and sustainability. Professionally, this experience will enhance my ability to analyze and implement sustainable public health strategies, a critical skill in our increasingly interconnected world.

By participating in the Frederick Honors Plus3 program, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of how sustainability and public health intersect, enriching both my educational journey and my future professional path.
