Day One in Birmingham!

The group at London Heathrow Airport

Upon arriving at the airport, we had a slow start. Our anticipation for the trip was met with immediate obstacles—delays, confusion, and waiting. We had been traveling for hours, yet it felt like the journey had barely begun. We waited for what seemed like an eternity because our bus driver was lost, and every passing minute stretched longer as exhaustion crept in. Despite the frustration, I found myself oddly at peace. Eventually, we boarded the bus, eager to move forward. As soon as I settled into my seat, fatigue overtook me, and I passed out. I don’t know exactly how long I slept, but it was a lot.

When we finally arrived at our hotel, the first thing we all did was drop off our luggage. The relief of shedding the weight of our bags was like shedding the stress of the journey itself. We were officially here. After a quick moment to breathe and freshen up, we wasted no time finding something to eat. Hunger from the long trip had caught up with all of us. We settled on O’Neill’s Irish Bar, a charming spot with a lively atmosphere. The scent of warm food and the sounds of people enjoying their meals made the place feel welcoming. I ordered a margarita pizza, and within minutes, it had disappeared from my plate. There’s something about eating after a long day of travel—it makes the food taste even better.

After lunch, we set off to explore the city. We walked for hours, absorbing our surroundings and getting a feel for Birmingham. From the very first glance, I noticed how much it resembled Pittsburgh. The familiarity was comforting—something about the layout, the architecture, and the atmosphere made me feel at home. I loved how easy it was to navigate the city; the streets and landmarks quickly became ingrained in my memory. With each step, I built a mental map of the places we visited, locking in a sense of direction.

The city itself had a fascinating blend of beauty and history. Modern buildings stood alongside structures that held stories from centuries past. The contrast was striking yet seamless, giving the city a character that was both vibrant and deeply rooted in history. Walking through different areas, I found myself constantly impressed by the architectural diversity. Some buildings were elegantly old-fashioned, while others were sleek and contemporary. Each corner had something to offer—a glimpse into the past, a celebration of the present.

Among the places we explored, a few stood out as my favorites. The canals were captivating. The water stretched through the city like veins, connecting different districts and offering a serene contrast to the bustling streets. What made them even more interesting were the boats—people lived in them all year round. The thought of residing on a boat seemed both peaceful and adventurous. I could picture myself embracing that lifestyle, waking up to the gentle sway of the water and the sound of the city awakening around me.

Another highlight was the art museum. It housed a variety of exhibits that beautifully captured Birmingham’s history, culture, and creative spirit. Every piece told a story, and I found myself engrossed in the narratives they presented. The artwork ranged from historical pieces showcasing the city’s past to modern interpretations of life in Birmingham. Walking through the museum, I felt a deeper connection to the place, understanding it beyond its physical appearance.

Throughout the day, the energy of the city was impossible to ignore. People moved with purpose, laughter echoed from lively groups, and every corner had something happening. Small entertainment areas were scattered throughout—places designed for people to gather, enjoy music, or simply relax. One particular sight caught our attention—a small carnival. The bright lights, cheerful sounds, and scent of fair food filled the air. Though we didn’t stop for long, the thought lingered in my mind—maybe it was worth checking out in the coming days.

One of my personal goals during this trip is to try as many restaurants as possible. Food has always been one of my greatest pleasures, and exploring new cuisines is something I deeply enjoy. Birmingham offers an impressive variety of dishes from around the world, and everything looks absolutely delicious. Whether it’s traditional British meals or international flavors, I want to experience it all.

Another memorable part of the night was simply spending time with our group. Sitting together, chatting, and watching soccer games. There’s something special about sharing moments like these with people who are part of the experience. The conversations, laughter, and companionship make the trip more meaningful.

Finally, my absolute favorite part of the day was arriving back at my room after hours of walking, sightseeing, and soaking in the city’s energy. The exhaustion was undeniable, and the comfort of my bed called to me. I unpacked my essentials, took a refreshing shower, and face-planted into the mattress. It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep yet again.

After getting some much-needed sleep, I made a point to call my family. Being away from home is exciting, but staying connected is just as important. I checked in, shared bits of my experience, and wished my mother a happy Mother’s Day. It was a small yet meaningful gesture, reminding me that no matter where I am, family remains a constant source of love and support.

Once my call ended, I ventured out for another walk. After some time wandering, I found a place to eat, treating myself to another new experience.

Reflecting on the day, I realized just how much I am enjoying this trip. Birmingham has so much to offer, and I’m excited for the two weeks ahead. There’s still so much to see, taste, and experience, and I can’t wait to embrace it all.
