My first impression of Costa Rica is a rich culture so different from ours that it’s almost difficult to compare it to anything I’ve seen. The people are so kind and willing to help. I am surprised by which people spoke English and who did not speak English. For instance, the salespeople in the mall spoke English, but the waiters at the restaurant did not. I really enjoyed the walking tour of Heredia, it feels like a town of rich history where people really live, not that has been gentrified by tourists.

I expected the people to be less patient than they were, but they are very patient while I struggle through my broken Spanish like a panicked toddler. The people also seem to be fascinated by the presence of us. This is funny to me because in the States I always feel like a “native” even when I’m in a different city because I speak the language but being here has put me on the other side of the coin and its a really special experience.
