Day 1 in Bilbao

Today we started off very early, meeting for breakfast at 6:30 am. From there we went to our first tour , which was the Basurto Hospital. This was so fun to me especially because it was the international day of nursing. During the presentation, we learned about the healthcare system in Spain, and how nurses and bioengineers contribute. Something I found really interesting, was that nurses actually have to test into nursing school, and need to get a pretty high score. It was so much fun being able to talk with the nurses and hear about their experiences!

After touring the hospital, we visited the BioBizkaia Heath Research and Institute. We split up into two different groups where we learned about the new ideas they were trying to implement into the healthcare system. My group got to learn about their virtual reality simulation they used to help teach nurses and surgeons. I really enjoyed learning about this because I think it would be a really innovative way to help prepare nursing students for the hospital setting. Back at home we use simulation labs, in which a professor has to run and instruct, but with the virtual reality, students can practice without needing an instructor. Although I didn’t get to try it out myself it was so much fun watching other students try it.
