First Day in Bilbao

After receiving some much needed sleep after a long day of travels we started our day off with a hotel breakfast. Between the cheesy potatoes and chocolate croissants it was quite delicious and possibly the best hotel dining experience i am yet to receive. Feeling revived and ready to go for the day we walked to the metro which we would be using for the first time to arrive to the hospital. At the hospital we were quickly greeted by and eager and friendly staff before fully taking in the beauty of the hospital. Unlike hospitals we know, this hospital had beautiful architecture with black arches and pretty brick walls. After entering we were given presentations by 4 different workers providing us an insite as to their roles as well as how healthcare operates in Spain in comparison to the US. It was extremely interesting to hear about the low cost of healthcare in comparison to America.

Following these presentations we traveled to the bilbao school of engineering. Here i was able to take part in a virtual reality presentation. The point of this virtual reality is to help doctors prep for surgery as it allows them to act out the entire surgery including patient interactions prior to doing so in real life. This was incredibly interesting but it made me wonder if technology such as this is really worth it? It’s amazing and helpful but it took three years and immense amounts of cash to create this program so I wonder if it’s truly benificial enough to outweigh efficiency and cost.

After a long day of engineering and nursing festivities we decided to take the metro back to the hotel to get yet another nap before dinner which me and some friends had at a local pizza shop. A delicious way to end a great day.
