Green Streets of Heredia

Today was our first day of exploring Costa Rica.  We started the day with walking through the city of Heredia. We learned of the city’s history and culture. The main attractions being the churches, parks and market. I was expecting a more European style city however the Heredia was much smaller and communal than I was expecting from a Costa Rican city. The churches seem vital to Costa Rican culture, that I was expecting. They are in the center of the city and stick out as the main structures of Heredia. Costa Rica culture is very much connected to Christianity specifically Catholicism. The market was definitely the highlight for me. The fruit was amazing better than I could imagine, beat all expectations. The food being sold was much more rich and fresh than anything I have experienced in the USA. Finally, the sustainable practices of the city have stuck out, they avoid the use of air conditioning, they are very conscious about water conservation and have a lot of green space.

My overall exceptions for a Costa Rican city was more traditionally based, building with older designs with a large Spanish influence. I knew Costa Rica is largely catholic with life being based largely around religion. I was not sure going in how developed and committed there were on sustainable practices. My final thoughts were definitely about the food. I was most excited for the food of Costa Rica. It has not disappointed. The food our mama tica has made is amazing. We have had very traditional meals all being very unique. The juice and coffee are the smoothest drinks I have had. The food and drinks went beyond my expectations.
