Landing in Amsterdam after an eight-hour flight felt like stepping into a new world. The city’s charm hit me right from the start as I navigated the trains and metro, getting acquainted with the local public transport system. Our destination was Amstelstation, where we dropped off our bags at the hotel before diving into the day’s adventures.

First on the agenda was getting to know Amsterdam, and what better way than a scavenger hunt? We hopped on the metro to Central Station, eager to explore. The scavenger hunt was not just a fun way to familiarize ourselves with the city but also a chance to learn about important landmarks. Wandering through the charming streets and historical spots gave me a real sense of the city’s character. One thing that stood out to me during our exploration was the difference in social interactions compared to back home in the United States. I noticed that people didn’t typically smile at each other when passing by on the streets, which felt different but also intriguing as a cultural nuance.

After the scavenger hunt, we didn’t stop there. A group of friends and I continued to explore the city’s vibrant atmosphere before setting off for our next big destination: the Keukenhof tulip fields. The endless rows of colorful tulips were absolutely mesmerizing. As we walked through the blooming gardens, we took the time to get to know each other better, sharing stories and soaking in the beauty around us.

Once we had our fill of nature’s splendor, we returned to Amstelstation to prepare for dinner. The entire group gathered for a traditional Dutch meal—stamppot—at a cozy restaurant located at the Nieuwmarkt metro stop. It was my first time trying it: a hearty plate of kale mashed potatoes topped with a savory sausage. The meal was both comforting and filling, and it was intriguing to learn that the restaurant practiced sustainability by reusing soda bottles instead of opening new ones for each customer. It struck me how the city genuinely cares about sustainability, from simple practices like reusing bottles to the widespread use of electric vehicles and bicycles. Seeing people commute on electric cars and bikes as their primary means of transport was impressive and showcased Amsterdam’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

After dinner, we decided to end the night on a sweet note by getting gelato as a group. It was the perfect way to wind down after a long day of exploring. As we savored our gelato, we reflected on our day, grateful for the new friendships and the vibrant experiences. Once finished, we headed back to the hotel to catch up on our jetlag and prepare for the next day’s adventures.

Amsterdam’s commitment to preserving the environment didn’t just show through its transportation methods but in the small, thoughtful practices integrated into daily life. Seeing how the city seamlessly blends its rich history with modern, eco-friendly initiatives made me appreciate it even more.

As the day came to a close, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. It wasn’t just the breathtaking sights or the delicious Dutch food that made the day special, but the sense of community and care for the environment that truly stood out. I’m looking forward to seeing more of what this beautiful city has to offer in the days to come.
