Today was our first official day in Vietnam after arriving to the Victory Hotel around midnight last night. After tailor fittings in the morning, we had lunch. I was expecting the family style service but actually participating in it made the meal really enjoyable. We could talk about the different things we were eating and get everyone’s opinion on all the really good food.
Then we were off to meet the UEF students where they had a cultural performance waiting for us. It had traditional instruments but a seemingly more modern spin on the song which stood out. Getting to meet the students was really fun. They are all so outgoing and wanted to talk to us. One of the girls I talked to even took me to the convenience store in the University. She bought two snacks for herself seemingly a sweet bread filled with different fillings. Definitely different from American snacks but still good.

We then went on a bus tour of the city. I was impressed with the cityscape especially as it became darker with all the skyscrapers. The city was definitely alive with a lot of street markets and shops lit up. The traffic was something to take note of. That time is seemingly very busy, and a lot of backups happen. I’m not sure how there are not more accidents because it looks like a mess with everyone on motor bikes while cars and buses are trying to turn.

While there were a lot of Vietnamese specific things that I saw, there were also some familiar luxury brands and restaurants. Even in the middle of Vietnam you can still find a McDonald’s. We saw development firsthand when we saw the statue of Ho Chi Minh and the first road that was converted into a pedestrian square.
Overall it was a great first day and I’m excited for tomorrow’s classes and site visits!
