Our third day in Pitt first brought us to Royal Flora Holland, the world’s largest flower exporters. We learned about the betting process that takes place from 6am-11am daily as well as the incredible organization and turnaround that happens on the distribution floor. After walking over 4 km in laps on the sky bridge around one of the company’s many distribution floors and snacking on a unique breakfast of cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, we took the bus to our next stop: the floating villages. These environmentally neutral villages were personalized by the resident upon building, and included many sustainable and renewable features such as solar panels on the roofs, large windows for natural light instead of electricity, underwater water pumps that are incredibly efficient at heating and cooling due to water’s high thermal capacity, and the buying and selling of sustainability generated energy to neighbors. These houses, though not entirely feasible for mass construction, were interesting experiment points for different sustainable features and inventions. Following our adventures at the floating villages as well as a hardy boar meat hamburger at a local restaurant, we took the ferry back to Central Station and went our separate ways to explore for the remainder of the day. Our third day in Amsterdam was packed with lots of walking, laughs, and moments to remember. I’m excited for our adventures to the cheese factory tomorrow!
