Today, we had a much shorter ride to Cafe Britt, taking only about fifteen minutes compared to the hour and a half yesterday. Cafe Britt recently bought Doka Estate last year to help improve the plantation and have a source for more beans. The Cafe Britt property was very nice, and it is obvious that they are a much more commercialized coffee company. The property had gardens, modern facilities, and a great visitor experience. Our tour guide was energetic and humorous, giving us insights into the coffee-making process. Cafe Britt also has a line called Britt Shops which sells coffee, along with other items such as chocolate, cookies, and souvenirs. These shops are more on the expensive side but are very popular with tourists. I think this is because the products look high-quality and try to stick to what is trendy.

Cafe Britt is different from Doka Estate in that they export roasted beans rather than the unroasted green beans. Rather than grow coffee on their own plantation, they own many farms in Costa Rica and source their beans from various regions to then bring back to their roastery and package the beans up to be sold. Cafe Britt does well in its delivery to consumers and has been able to expand its consumer base to eleven different countries. This is done through their partnership with Morpho Travel Experience, which has enabled Cafe Britt to sell their products in stores outside of Costa Rica. They also opened up e-commerce to the United States and Canada, which differentiates them from other coffee producers in Costa Rica. Most coffee farms in Costa Rica sell their beans to companies in other countries for those companies to then roast and sell in stores or coffee shops. I think that their approach to business is smart and has been proven to work. We saw this in the graphs that showed their revenue growing exponentially since the pandemic.

We finished the day off with some dance lessons, learning three dance styles: salsa, bachata, and merengue. It was interesting, to say the least. Some of us then expended the rest of our energy by sprinting up the hill located a few blocks from our homestay.
