Visiting Vasso Eliades – Day 2

We started off out day today by visiting Vasso Eliades Ltd., which came off as an incredibly organized and wide spread company, despite the relatively limited size of its warehouse. It felt like this because of the wide variety of products it markets, distributes, and sells. This includes Nestle chocolate, jewelry, watches, alcohol, espresso, and sports equipment among other things. With 400+ employees and 5,300+ clients, it came across as very powerful. Additionally, I really appreciated their efforts towards Corporate Responsibility, especially in their energy usage. The fact that they used over 100% environmentally energy sources, from solar power to tubes, is insane. I noticed that their warehouse looked very average, but that they used these types of lights all over which is really cool.

Later, we went back to UNIC to listen through a few lectures, one of them being a history lecture from Dr. Solomou. I found that the lecture was similar and different from Pitt’s in a few ways. The slides were far more limited than the ones that are usually displayed at Pitt, which allowed more emphasis to be on his talking during the presentation. Additionally, it seems as though lectures at UNIC may be longer and have more of a focus on understanding and retaining the information rather than note taking. Nevertheless, it reminded me of Pitt’s lectures through its class structure of relying on a slideshow at all, and giving a brief overview before diving in to the topic. Overall, the lecture was quite interesting despite it not being perfectly in a format we were used to. Two facts I learned from the lecture were that rather than being an even split, Cyprus is primarily made up of Greek people, around 78%, with them remaining here for over 3,000 years. Also, I learned about the granting of Independence by the British, and how although it was similar to the American Revolution, it didn’t completely give the Greek Cypriots what they wanted as they wanted to be a part of Greece.
