The first day in Germany we landed in the Munich airport around 7am, and drove a little over an hour to Augsburg. The drive there we passed mostly rural fields, and it turned into more of a city when we got closer to our hotel. We dropped our luggage off and met with Jonathan and Elizabeth. They took us to walk around the city, and we stopped for sandwiches and later a cafe to sit down.
We had about two hours before our Augsburg city tour, so Elizabeth showed us a really beautiful park (hofgarten) that we could hang out in until we met up for the tour. Our tour guide took us around for about an hour and a half, explaining how religion, politics, and daily life shaped the architecture. She showed us architecture that was built pre and post bombing of Augsburg, and small windows looking into butcher shops so that people could look in and make sure they were preparing the meat in the proper manner. She showed us the painted on building where they produce a fabric that is a mix of linen and cotton, so it is not only soft, but very durable.
We saw the set of buildings that poor people were able to live in for only 80 cents. After the tour we were able to go to our hotel rooms and relax a bit before going to dinner and meeting up with the German students we would later work with. It was a great first day!
