Day 3: Kakopetria aka Bad Rock

In the beginning of the day, I got to visit Wargaming, which is a video game company that was founded in 1998. At the gaming company I was very interested in what our presenter Alexander had to say about the financial side of this franchise. In terms of supply chain, practically all of their means of transporting their product is done virtually, they must go through another user such as Apple, Steam, Microsoft, in order to launch their game to phone and other devices. What I thought was wild was that the company doesn’t need to pay an upfront fee to Apple for it to be in their app store, however Apple takes 30 percent of all in game purchases and this is for all games. Every time someone buys something in a game, Apple is also making a profit and apparently there are many lawsuits trying to fit for how unjust this percentage is to take. And I totally agree!! That is way too much for Apple to be taking especially when these in app purchases are usually less than 5 dollars.

During the second half of the day we spent in Kakopetria, which mean bad rock. The village got its name from the old story that Pappous and Yiayias would tell their grandchildren. The story is that there was a giant rock that rolled and ended up killing a newlywed couple on their wedding day. This tragic accident, gave this town their name and the giant rock is a spectacle to look at in the village. Another thing I learned was that Wednesday is considered their Sunday, since they are open for most tourists on the weekends. While we were at St. Nicholas of the Roof Church, I was able to light a candle outside which is apart of my Greek Orthodox culture. I learned that this small church once held services for worship! I also learned that the fresco paintings that cover the church cannot be photographed or they will loose their color. Overall today was a fun day!
