Today we got up early to head to Nuremberg and visit a MAN truck factory. Nuremberg was heavily bombed in the second World War so I was interesting to see what was rebuilt and what survived the bombing. There were old castle wall and original timber buildings still standing from 500+ years ago. It’s amazing how 80 year old buildings are considered “new”. It’s a fascinating mix of more modern and medieval history all in one location.
After the city tour, we left to tour a MAN engine facility. I expected either fully autonomous production, and fully manual, but it was actually a mix of both. Robotic platforms move engines from one section to another, but almost all of the work was done by humans. Large robot arms move the engines like they were weightless. I wish I would have taken a picture of the facility but we were not allowed. There were tour groups from all around the world seeing the factory at the same time as us. Some from Sweden, India, and other places all over. Overall is was very interesting and the tour guide was very knowledgable about the engines and the company as a whole.
