Day Three: Profit, People, Planet

Day three blew past! I’m really starting to settle in and become more accustomed to the weather, culture, and fast-paced schedule. Today was especially enjoyable, and the FPT Software company site visit easily stole the spotlight. On a side note, with only three days in, and after drinking countless bottles, I can say La Vie and Vinh Hao water really do their job of keeping me refreshed throughout the day. They’ve definitely earned their reputation here in Vietnam!

Today’s guest lecture on green transformation was highly insightful and humorous. One aspect of Professor Minh’s lecture that really resonated with me was the idea that companies will only genuinely prioritize sustainability if it saves them money in the long run. It might sound a tad harsh, but it’s realistic—businesses exist to make profit. For companies with large carbon footprints, there has to be an incentive to change. Both Professor Minh and Mr. Quang, the co-founder of GreenViet, has touched on the concept of “profit, people, planet.” This has stuck with me, not just because I’m a sucker for alliteration, but because it perfectly summarizes how sustainability can be a strategic priority instead of just a feel-good add-on.

Tying into what we learned yesterday about green architecture, the best part of FPT’s building was hands down its innovative design. The cascading vines, the natural airflow, the open space, it all contributed to a sense of calm, creativity, and a phenomenal way to connect with nature. I genuinely wish we had more buildings such as FPT’s  in the U.S as it’s proof that sustainability and style can go hand in hand.

FPT software’s session with Phil (La Hoai Vu) was also insightful. The highlight for me was his emphasis on employee happiness. From the quick glimpses I saw, it genuinely seemed like people enjoyed working there, and it’s no surprise, considering they have an on-site 7-Eleven and coffee shop. However, beyond the perks, it was FPT’s commitment to fostering a supportive and joyful workplace that really stood out to me.
