Day 5 was packed with so many events, starting off with a tango lesson led by two tango dancers! They taught us the basic steps as we danced with our fellow peers. We then took a bus to the La Matanza and toured the Paroissien Hospital and its university where we met the administrators and fellow nursing students. They talked about how their public hospital is structured as well as the issues that surround their environment. Their biggest challenge is that most cannot afford treatment outside the hospital for maintaining their health. Trauma is also a major challenge as it shows to have high mortality rates. Soon after we hopped on the bus to head over to the university where the nursing students showed us their simulation as well as sharing a presentation about how their program is organized. Their program consists of five years with clinicals and interdisciplinary discussions while also helping the community such as vaccination campaign for COVID. In addition, they have internship programs that aid in their career.
Federalism and How It Relates to the Recent Hospitals We Visited:
Federalism is a distribution of power with government of differing levels: national and state/local. The United States is organized through national and state governments while Argentina is organized by national, provincial, and, municipals. San Isidro, a public hospital, is located in a more wealthy area in which the population cover is much better as well as having better resources. The taxes that they recieve are from a nicer area with a smaller population contributing a more efficient facility, this is funded through the municipals. On the other hand, the Paroissien Hospital, a public hospital, is funded by the provinces along with having a higher population but less efficient resources. This hospital focused on mental health, incorporates primary care, and have many programs that aid in education and overall health, yet still face many challenges such as funding and maintenance of outpatients. While both of these hospitals are open to the public, they each have their differences in how they are organized.
