Childhood Dream Come True!

As a kid, I used to stare out the window of airplanes and dream about touching a cloud. They seemed so interesting to me, and I just wanted to reach my arm out. Today, hiking through the Monteverde cloud forest, I finally got to do essentially that by being in and walking through a cloud! On the hike, I was amazed at all the animals and plants I saw, all of which are proof of the beauty that occurs when conservation is made a priority.

If I had to choose one priority, I would focus on conservation. Without thriving ecosystems, both productivity and long-term sustainability will not survive. In Monteverde, conversation also supports tourism, which helps fund the community, environmental research, and education. Monteverde’s efforts mirror those of Costa Rica in general, working towards increased renewable energy, reforestation, and much more.

During our lecture, we learned how complex it can be to balance all aspects, especially with increased climate change. Monteverde is sensitive to these environmental shifts due to its differences in climate and high altitude. However, other places in Costa Rica are also experiencing difficulties as well, specifically with cuts in funding to support social programs. Despite this, places like Monteverde are still powering through and protecting their future.
