After a quick one-hour drive, we made our way down to Limassol, a city on the southern coast of Cyprus. Before checking into our hotel, we visited Kourion, an ancient city-kingdom dating back to the 12th century BCE. There were several interesting facts about Kourion, but the most notable was its location on a higher position overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This gave them military and trade advantages due to their ability to monitor incoming ships and detect potential invasions. After Kourion, we were given a couple of hours to explore Limassol and get lunch before exploring Limassol Castle, one of the most popular historical landmarks in Cyprus. It was so nice to see the blue water, boats, and a city full of lively people. After a satisfying meal, we made our way into Limassol Castle. I found it very interesting that this entire castle reflected Cyprus’s history from the Romans to the Byzantines, all the way to the Ottomans and the British. It was extremely preserved with multiple rooms showcasing Limasol’s cultural heritage. One of the most unique facts was that archaeologists found a Roman tomb underneath the castle, which was probably chosen for spiritual reasons.
