Today’s site visit was probably the most interesting to me because it was about video game design, and I’ve played video games my whole life, including the ones that GlassEgg deals with on a daily basis. GlassEgg does many different projects, but the main one that they focus on is vehicle design. It was intriguing to me how much detail a company that’s as big as GlassEgg puts into their work because they care about the smallest things when no one else would even think of doing that. Some of the factors for why I believe that GlassEgg continues to have dominance in their market is because they focus on a small part of the video game design industry and they’re loyal/reliable. Since they mostly focus on vehicle, environment, and character design, it’s easier to put a lot of focus onto their projects since they aren’t trying to produce multiple different things in different sectors of the gaming industry. Also since GlassEgg has been with Forza almost since they were founded, it shows how loyal they truly are to their projects and other companies. I know a lot of teams and companies work together for a good amount of years and then part ways later, which could give them a bad look, but GlassEgg is the complete opposite; they use their loyalty and reliability to get an edge over other companies that are fighting for the same market share. But, each company in this market space of game design will eventually face some challenges in the future, and the main one that I think companies will fall victim to is that they will reach a plateau soon. Over the past few decades, game design has increased exponentially, starting off with games being made with just black and white pixels, to now being almost perfectly realistic, it’s come a long way. But, the goal is of course realism, and at some point you can’t get more perfect than a human itself, so it seems like somewhere in the next decade the game design industry will reach a plateau where they can’t get anymore realistic.
This whole week has flown by so fast I can’t believe I have less than a week left. One of my favorite moments from this week was when I woke up early on day 3 to try banh mi for the first time with one of the UEF and it was even better than I had expected. Little memories and photos like these will stay with me forever and I’m trying my best to keep them coming.
