Down South

I knew from looking through the window on the bus as we approached Kourion that it was going to be one of my favorite places this far. Safe to say, I was correct. I love history, so not only did Kourion being packed with history make this one of my top destinations of the trip this far, but so did the amazing views. Sitting in the theatre and overlooking the water made me start thinking of a future life by the water. The sights, the sounds, and the history, especially learning about the House of Eustolius is what kept me constantly entertained. More specifically, I loved learning about how people would enter and live in the house. We learned that if one wants to enter the house they must rinse their feet in this miniature bath. Another interesting fact was that people not only took hot showers, which sound the most pleasing, but they also take cold showers. In todays age cold showers are becoming more popular and I am wondering if those who push for cold showers now, know about the old traditions such as the ones experienced in Kourion. To sum up, I love visiting old civilizations and places, so this was a very enjoyable experience.

Limassol started off with some beautiful walks and views alongside the water, followed by a delicious meal and the purchase of some lovely souvenirs. After finally suppressing that hunger craving for some hearty food, we took a visit to the Limassol Castle. This was where we learned a surplus of information from our very kind tour guide. Through many of the interesting facts that I learned, one of them really stood out to me. This would be the fact that the castle was once destroyed via explosives, and since has been rebuilt in various sections. I was really shocked to learn this because from looking at the castle not only from a far, but also standing inside of it, I would never have guessed that it was ever subject to any harm other than erosion. Despite the explosion, I think the castle perfectly embodied fortification and protection. I love castles, having had the privilege to visit many throughout Europe, and this one simply enhanced that admiration. The very old castle was a nice break from some of the older, although not quite as old, buildings to which I have gotten used to seeing across Cyprus.
